Advent Day 11 - Lion of Judah

It's Day 11 of my current series, blogging through the season of Advent. Thank you for joining me here!

The Bible reading for today is Genesis 49: 9 - 10 ...

Judah is a young lion - my son, you return from the kill. He crouches; he lies down like a lion or a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah or the staff from between his feet until He whose right it is comes and the obedience of the peoples belongs to Him.

In this passage, shortly before his time on earth ends, Jacob is giving his final prophetic blessing to his 12 sons.

Clearly, the tribe of Judah is significant. Throughout Scripture, a reference to the tribe of Judah is a reference to the human lineage of Christ (see Matthew 1). Jesus was a descendant of Judah, a family tree that also included David, Solomon, and Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father.

When you read the verses that speak of the Lion of the tribe of Judah in Scripture, you will see that they point to the conquering, victorious king Who would descend from Judah’s lineage. And as New Testament Believers, we know that this lion was pointing to only one Person, Jesus himself, God in human form, who is the lion of the tribe of Judah.

I love how our Advent readings show us so clearly the fulfillment of the promise and prophecy of God’s Word. This should fill us with hope and confidence in the One who will ultimately be our Deliverer, which we see prophesied in Revelation 5: 5: “Then one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.’"
